BEAUMONT, TX, July 8, 2014 – A federal judge on Monday granted preliminary approval to a landmark deal that would compensate thousands of former NFL players for concussion related claims. Provost Umphrey lawyer Matthew Matheny has served as lead attorney in the NFL concussion litigation on behalf of the firm.
"We believe that the preliminary approval of the settlement is a great win for our clients and historic achievement by bringing to light the connection between concussions and long term neuro-cognitive injury. Provost Umphrey is optimistic that this settlement will be able to provide for former players suffering from neurological problems. With no cap on the settlement, former NFL players will be able to receive the compensation and the medical care that they deserve and need," says Matheny.
Provost Umphrey became involved in the NFL Concussion Litigation in April of 2012. The firm has been dedicated to reaching the best possible outcome for its NFL clients. The settlement will provide eligible retired players with baseline neurological exams and include monetary awards for diagnoses of ALS, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and early and moderate dementia. The revised settlement eliminates the cap on overall damage claims but retains a payout formula for individual retirees that considers their age and illness. All valid claims will be paid in full for 65 years.
For fifty years, Provost Umphrey's mission has remained to seek justice for those most in need – those who have suffered a personal injury or death due to the wrongful conduct of others. Our attorneys fight for our clients nationwide with offices in Beaumont and Houston, Texas and Nashville, Tennessee.
