New Study Shows Increased Risk of Heart Attack Following Testosterone Therapy
A study published in the scientific journal PLOS ONE in January 2014, showed that testosterone therapy increases the risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack) in men of all ages. The study of nearly 56,000 testosterone users showed that the risk of heart attack doubled in men over age 65 and nearly tripled in men under age 65 who had histories of heart disease.
A Large Scale Problem
The number of prescriptions written for "Low-T" testosterone therapy has exploded in recent years, from about 1 million in the year 2000 to nearly 5.5 million in 2011. A study published last year in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that 25% of the men who received prescriptions had never even had their testosterone levels tested, and only about half the men who were tested actually had abnormally low testosterone levels, a condition called hypogonadism.
Effective advertising of "Low-T" supplements on television, radio and the Internet has helped drug companies convince men to use these supplements. Whether legal liability for heart attacks lies with these companies or with doctors who prescribe testosterone unnecessarily (or a combination of both) is yet to be decided, as the litigation is in its early stages. What is clear is that anyone who has suffered a heart attack, stroke, blood clots, liver damage or other health complications after taking testosterone should consult with an attorney to discuss a potential claim.
