Provost Umphrey Law Firm, LLP extends its congratulations to Matthew Matheny for being named its newest equity partner. Matheny has been with the firm for 18 years and specializes in various practice areas, including personal injury, wrongful death, and product liability.

Matheny, raised in Beaumont, received his undergraduate degree in History from Rhodes College in Memphis Tennessee and graduated from the Baylor University School of Law in Waco, Texas in 2003. He is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization, making him part of the two percent of lawyers in Texas who are Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law.

Matheny was named a Texas Super Lawyer for the fifth consecutive year and has been included in The Best Lawyers in America listing six years running. He has also received recognition as Texas Rising Stars (2010, 2012 - 2015); The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100 Trial Lawyers (2013 - present); Baylor Young Lawyer of the Year (2015); and Southeast Texas Lawyer of the Year for Mass Tort and Class Action Litigation by US News (2018).

One of Matheny’s most notable achievements includes obtaining, alongside Equity Partner James Payne, the largest wrongful death settlement for an individual against a defendant in South Carolina history. Matheny represents plaintiffs in multiple catastrophic injury and death cases and has served as counsel in the high-profile NFL concussion litigation.

Outside of the legal arena, Matheny has given his time in many different capacities throughout the Southeast Texas community. He has been an active participant in civic events and charities including Some Other Place, Shorkey Center, The Neches River Festival, and The Julie Rogers Gift of Life Program. Matheny is a current member of the board of directors for Beaumont Main Street.

Five years ago, in his “Personally Speaking with Matthew C. Matheny” interview, Matheny was asked where he saw himself in five years, and due to his hard work and tenacity, his goals are being achieved.

“I set out to become an equity partner at this great firm, and it’s an honor and privilege to be named as such,” said Matheny. “I am excited to see my life’s work continue to grow while contributing to the success of Provost Umphrey and the people we represent.”

Provost Umphrey Law Firm, LLP continues its tradition of raising hard-working lawyers that represent everyday people, helping them seek justice and get the results they deserve.
