He is a member of the board of directors of Texas State Bank, was formerly the chairman of the board for Community Bank and is a former vice chairman of the Texas State Parks and Wildlife Commission. His numerous community contributions include:
- Building a law center at Baylor University (The Sheila and Walter Umphrey Law Center)
- Lighting a ballpark for physically challenged kids
- Donating land for a state park
