A yearlong comprehensive study of the air quality in the Fort Worth area recently yielded highly anticipated results, setting off a wave of controversy about the environmental effects of urban gas drilling.

Widespread Benzene Contamination in Fort Wirth

As part of the study, a team of independent researchers collected air samples from around the city in order to monitor the levels of airborne pollutants. Benzene, a toxic chemical that is often a telltale sign of emission problems, was found in 94 percent of the samples.

This has raised concerns among citizens and city officials about the potential long-term impact that the contamination could have on public health.

While benzene occurs naturally in crude oil and gasoline, most benzene exposure occurs as a result of human activities. Despite its toxic nature, benzene is one of the commonly used industrial chemicals in the United States.

Health Consequences of Benzene Exposure

Some Texas Benzene exposure lawyers argue that benzene is highly dangerous because the chemical interferes with the body's ability to regulate cell function. People who are exposed to high levels of benzene at work or in the environment may suffer from suppressed bone marrow function and immune system deficiencies. These individuals are also more likely than the general population to develop leukemia, a cancer of the blood-forming organs.

Workers in the oil and gas industries face an increased risk of toxic benzene exposure, as do people who work closely with solvents, adhesives and other industrial chemicals. In addition, benzene is often present in the air in neighborhoods surrounding factories and refineries, posing a potential threat to those who live or work in those communities.

Common symptoms of benzene exposure include:

  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Tremors
  • Fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Headaches
  • Confusion or disorientation

Legal Help for Victims of Benzene Exposure

If you or a loved one is suffering from an illness related to benzene exposure, contacting an experienced personal injury attorney as soon as possible is recommended.
