Alleged Toxic Chemicals Leak at BP Texas Refinery
Despite BP's recent containment of the largest oil spill on record, problems continue to surface for the oil giant. Several chemicals have allegedly leaked from the Texas City Refinery Plant causing workers and the public serious health problems.
This past spring, 17,000 lbs of benzene, a human carcinogen known to cause leukemia, were found leaking into the air. Individuals exposed to the chemical reported suffering allergic reactions as well as headaches and nosebleeds.
Just last month, hydrocarbons from the BP Texas City Refinery's Pipestill 3A unit were also detected in the air. According to the Houston Chronicle, the leak has posed an "extreme hazard" to individuals inside and outside the plant.
A spokesperson for BP has indicated that BP is in contact with the requisite regulatory agencies regarding the incident including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
